ABSTRACT

The porpuse of the study which has been carried out in the Banjarnegara areas , was to investigate whether the surface samples of fine grained clastic sediments, including their lithofacies and possess source rock potential.

Seventeen samples have been analyzed for their Total Organic Carbon (TOC) content. The result indicated TOC values varying between 0.36 to 1.55 %. The analyses indicate that 4 possess good, 11 samples showing moderate and the remaining 2 samples as having no potential to generate hydrocarbon. Rock Eval Pyrolisis was conducted on 15 samples with potential hydrocarbon generating characteristics, with HI values between 15 – 163 mg HC/g TOC.

Based on the HI evaluation parameter value of source rock (Waples, 1985), those samples are of C, CD and D organic facies. These type source rock are potentially capable of generating small quatities of hydrocarbon and gas.

The preliminary result from the out crop observation indicate that the fine – grain clastic rock in Banjarnegara might have been deposited in dysaerob environment.
